Many of us live in Dixie Alley, the place where severe weather occurs regularly. By severe, we’re talking tornadoes, derechos, flooding, forest fires, and hurricanes. Dixie Alley is composed of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. In 2017 alone, these states were hit with more than 3,576 severe storms, according to data from the National Weather Service. Let’s factor in Tornado Alley: Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas; and add at least 7,331 more to our severe storm total. These states contend with most of our country’s more terrifying weather. We can’t forget the hurricanes. Add in another 1,970 from the coastal states along the Atlantic: Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
The more we look at this picture, the easier it is to see that no one is safe. Yes, we can build better structures; yes, we can create safer shelters; yes, with advanced meteorological equipment, we can even see what’s coming and how bad it might be. In the end, once that storm front starts banging down your door, there is still not much you can do to keep the damage at bay. If you have time to prepare, check out Ready.gov for a plethora of resources to help you prepare for nasty weather.
In the storms raging from April 26 through May 19 in Missouri and Arkansas alone, accumulative rainfall was 11.15 and 10.54 inches respectively. Flash flooding, mudslides, hail, and tornados racked up a bill of more than $14 million in property damages.
